I used to coast in neutral and sometimes I would shift from R to D when the car was rolling backwards at < 3mph. No longer.

What, driving an automatic? Tragically, people do this a lot, especially in the US.

My ex’s parents both always shifted their cars into drive from reverse without even attempting to stop. It’s no wonder the last time I rode in either of their cars the transmissions were sloppy as fuck all. I also blame her father for the Vue’s transmission going out, but that’s a story for another time.

I have neutral dropped the Safari before, but that’s because I was actively trying to kill the damn thing, the M3 won’t even let you shift from neutral to drive without hitting the brake.

My father bought his first automatic 25 years ago and has literally never come to a stop before changing from R to D or parking.

One vehicle’s transmission survived 275,000 miles of this torture like it was no big deal, while the other had the transmission replaced at < 20,000 miles after it vaporized when he was pulling out of the driveway. He’s not allowed to drive my auto dd.

Take care of your transmissions, kids!

When doing vehicle development for 2014 Grand Cherokee with the 8 speed (first time it had) we had to do actual testing of rolling in reverse and shifting into drive. It actually has to be calibrated to avoid clunking or grinding of gears because we know people will do it in the real world even though they’re not supposed to

coasting in neutral for fuel savings is 50/50. Depends on the vehicle. There’s usually 2 possible things happen depending on the vehicle when coasting down.

1) the torque converter is locked up, fuel is shut off, and the torque input from the wheels will keep the engine rotating

2) the torque converter is unlocked and the engine speed will drop to idle

both of these save fuel, but it depends on the vehicle demand and only one happens

Wait...how does shifting into neutral at a stop light cause wear to the transmission? That’s the only one I can’t figure out why it’s bad

I avoid driving automatics like the plague... But when I do I sure do #2 and #4... (of course, #2 is done at like 1 or 2mph, but still...)

A stopped car that tries to keep on moving forward despite you, its driver, not wanting to. WTF???? Also I switch into “drive” when getting out of a parking spot in reverse fairly often... My car doesn’t complain, this crappy autobox better not lol

I did the rolling reverse to drive all the time in my old car. I figure that was probably the least damaging thing I put it through and, in hindsight, treating the transmission better still wouldn’t have extended the life of that car. But I wouldn’t do it now.

My wife still does the shift from reverse to drive thing while the car is in motion thing, and it drives me fucking bonkers.

I think it’s just if you do it frequently it just wears down on the linkages and things quicker. Seems like the least of the issues in that list.

I actually knew a guy who insisted that to properly drive an automatic, you had to treat it like a manual, by switching from drive to 4, then 3, then 2, then 1, before putting it in neutral at stops. It was literally infuriating to ride with him and he could not be convinced otherwise. The most illogical part was that he was a gearhead. I still have no idea how that worked.
